A hat by Borsalino needs no introduction
Borsalino, according to the Green book, needs to be written with a lowercase letter as it is regarded as a generic. The Borsalinois named after Giuseppe Borsalino, an Italian hatter who in 1857 started a hat factory in Alessandria, near Milan. Borsalino hats are made fromrabbit’s back hair from Piedmont andimported India rubber glue which give the hats their characteristic resilience. The stylish black fedoras were a great success from the beginning. At its peak in 1913, the Italian hat factory produced 2 million hats annually and sold them worldwide. At that time three thousand people were employed and there were 2700 different models made before demand gradually decreased. A revival came in 1969 when Jacques Deray made the movie “Borsalino” starring Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo in the leading roles. The Borsalino hat was worn by, among others; the German artist Joseph Beuys (1921-1986), Al Capone, Humphrey Bogart, Mikhail Gorbachev, Michael Jackson, Harry Mulisch and Pope John Paul II. Writer J.W. Schotman (1892-1976) wrote a poem dedicated to his Borsalino hat: Oh, Friend! My Borsalino Hat! Thou art my love, thou stood me well! For rain, wind and sun glows, you kept my dreamy head protected!

FRAY – Italian style
Fray was set up by Lucia Pasin in 1962 in one of the most charming and characteristic streets in the historic centre of Bologna, a crossroads for culture, industriousness and ancient traditions, blended together in a continuous drive of enterprise. Elegance, excellent quality and finishing touches done strictly by hand represent a production philosophy that is part of the best craftsman and family tradition now reflected in the more spacious and modern workshop at Casalecchio di Reno.
Its original production philosophy based on respect for the traditional techniques used by masters craftsmen, guaranteeing that old and new customers will still find the same sober, classic elegance and utter quality of its products, with finishing touches meticulously stitched by hand.
We cannot fail and acknowledge that the elegance of a properly made shirt represents a value that none of the twists of fashion have ever been able to really despoil. The merits of the steadfastness of this element of high class in men’s elegance are partly down to the firms which have made it their mission to aspire to the perfectly constructed shirt.
Fray is one of a limited number of firms in Italy which have taken up the gauntlet for this garment, essential for any man who wishes to be considered elegant
In the basics of the art of shirt making, fray’s heritage fears no comparison; indeed, its reputation among its customers, loyal to the brand for many years, is the best proof that rigueur and extreme attention to product quality is a value which goes beyond the latest twists of fashion.
